Dubar Marina

This development means that Dubai is set to become an attractive second-home destination. Until recently, luxury off-plan projects such as the Dubai Marina, really only attracted buyers looking for an investment. Now foreigners – who comprise 80 per cent of the state’s estimated 1.2 million people – living in Dubai are starting to fork out on second homes to live in.

Foreign property owners taking time out from Dubai also have the opportunity to benefit financially from their home; the new legislation gives the green light for them to “derive profit from their property or rent it out for a period not exceeding 99 years”. As residents in Dubai increase by a staggering 200,000 annually, there should be no shortage of takers in the rental market. Furthermore, a short supply of available rental property – due to a delay in completing some major developments – has led to a hike in rental rates. Landlords can expect yields of 10 to 15 per cent. All in all, buying a freehold property there could be a lucrative move.

Man-made islands

The World, Dubai

The same company that brought us The Palm Islands, Al Nakheel Properties (Nakheel Corp), have done it again expanding their portfolio of man-made islands with this latest Dubai island project shaped like the continents of the world. The World will consist of between 250 to 300 smaller private artifical islands divided into four categories - private homes, estate homes, dream resorts, and community islands. Each island will range from 250,000 to 900,000 square feet in size, with 50 to 100 metres of water between each island. The development is to cover an area of 9 kilometers in length and 6 kilometers in width, surrounded by an oval shaped breakwater. The only means of transportation between the islands will be by marine transport.

Construction has begun on the $US 1.8 billion project which is set to be completed by the end of 2005. It will be located 4 kilometers off the shore of Jumeirah, close to the The Palm Jumeirah, between Burj Al Arab and Port Rashid of Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE). Each island will be sold to selected private developers and are expected to have pricing beginning at Dhs. 25 million (US$ 6.85 million).

Ice Hotel

Posted by Julz | 12:32 AM | , | 0 comments »

If your relationship is showing signs of cooling down, there is no better way to rekindle the fires of passion than to spend a night in a hotel made of ice. Every winter a giant igloo is built in Quebec City, Canada and as North America's only Ice Hotel and its frigid rooms are in high demand. Since candles and body heat are the major thermal sources, it is the perfect place for couples. A night in the Ice Hotel requires a lot of cuddling and body contact in an effort to keep warm, if nothing else.

Everything in the Ice Hotel is created from Mother Nature’s glory, from chairs carved out of snow, right down to drinking glasses made of ice. For those from warmer areas it might sound chilly and uninviting, but the beauty and experience of staying in the hotel makes it worthwhile. The Ice Hotel’s architecture and design is worth the visit alone. The cathedral ceilings, detailed arches and gorgeous sculptures that decorate every room and hallway present the hotel as an artistic wonder rather than a giant ice box.

At first I was skeptical when told that even the beds in the hotel were made of blocks of ice. All guests sleep zipped up in sleeping bags on top of a foam mattress and deer skin pelts that lie on top of ice blocks. Paying to stay in a four star hotel, this did not sound like the depiction of comfort, but if you follow the sleeping guidelines given to you by the hotel, it is really not that bad. The hotel averages an indoor temperature of 28F to 23F. Compared to the often -18F outside, it remains quite warm inside. Now this is very important, as tempting as it might be, do not under any circumstances snuggle your nose inside your sleeping bag. The moisture you breathe into the bag will chill you to the bone. However, if you follow this advice and still find it cold, just remember the bragging rights that come with sleeping like an Eskimo for a night. Unlike Eskimos though, you have access to hotel’s heated outdoor Jacuzzi’s to help warm up, so bring your bathing suit.

The Ice Hotel is celebrating its fifth year of operation in 2005. Open only from January until April, the hotel is constructed from scratch starting each November. Every time it is rebuilt it becomes more popular and more extravagant. This year the hotel gave a makeover to the wedding chapel, adding more detail and design, including a snow steeple. In addition to the 32 rooms and theme suites, the hotel has a cinema/theatre, an art gallery and two exhibit rooms. For night entertainment the N’ice Club is the place to go. It offers high energy dancing and comedy shows that gets the blood flowing. There is also the Absolut Ice Bar where drinks are offered to those over the age of eighteen.

Romantic nights in the Ice Hotel cost as much as a Caribbean cruise but you have to make allowances since the entire structure becomes a big puddle in the spring and has to be rebuilt each winter. If you can afford the cost, the hotel has special accommodations for couples looking for an especially romantic experience. These packages include wine served in ice glasses, a candle lit theme suit and even sleeping bags that are zipped together.

The Ice Hotel

While staying at the Ice Hotel, you and your partner can develop some essential winter survival skills. Sign up for Queenzy workshop and you will learn how real Eskimos built Igloos. You work in teams to craft an original style ice hut in only two and a half hours. If you are feeling less physically inclined, try your hand at Catshalac, other wise known as ice fishing or even Portneuf Aventure, snowmobiling. The hotel offers a wide array of outdoor activities, such as snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, ice skating and even dog-sledding. If you want stay entertained, you can invest in a multi-activity pass that combines outdoor activities such as forest survival training with indoor activities like access to the game and movie rooms.

If you really fall in love, with both your partner and the hotel, weddings can be arranged in the Ice Hotel’s chapel, from small and simple to a full fledged ceremony and reception. If a winter wedding has been your dream, this is the place to make the day come true. The chapel itself is, of course, built purely from ice and snow. It is filled with amazing ice sculptures and can be decorated with your choice of flowers and candles. The hotel provides a wedding planner to help you meet your every winter wonderland wedding needs. By the way, did I mention that a honeymoon in Tahiti is included in some wedding packages?

There is no doubt that the Ice Hotel is an amazing place, based on its uniqueness and beauty, but I am sure many people have their doubts. Do not worry; there are certain areas of the hotel that are heated, such as the washrooms. The facilities are especially designed to accommodate every need and although it might sound unlikely, the stay there really is quite comfortable. I found that being constantly in awe of the hotel itself along with the many activities; I was too distracted to really think about the temperature. So, if you chose the Ice Hotel as your next romantic adventure, be warned, reservation lists for an overnights stay are up to a years wait. Book as soon as possible because this experience will make you a true adventurer.

The Ice Hotel is located about half an hour west of Quebec City. It is accessible by either car or shuttle. If you are driving, free parking is available of the hotel. Just take Highway 40 to Exit 295 "

B-2 US aircraft

Posted by Julz | 12:18 AM | | 0 comments »

The B-2 Spirit is a multi-role bomber capable of delivering both conventional and nuclear munitions.

Along with the B-52 and B-1B, the B-2 provides the penetrating flexibility and effectiveness inherent in manned bombers. Its low-observable, or "stealth," characteristics give it the unique ability to penetrate an enemy's most sophisticated defenses and threaten its most valued, and heavily defended, targets. Its capability to penetrate air defenses and threaten effective retaliation provide an effective deterrent and combat force well into the 21st century.

The blending of low-observable technologies with high aerodynamic efficiency and large payload gives the B-2 important advantages over existing bombers. Its low-observability provides it greater freedom of action at high altitudes, thus increasing its range and a better field of view for the aircraft's sensors. Its unrefueled range is approximately 6,000 nautical miles (9,600 kilometers).

The B-2's low observability is derived from a combination of reduced infrared, acoustic, electromagnetic, visual and radar signatures. These signatures make it difficult for the sophisticated defensive systems to detect, track and engage the B-2. Many aspects of the low-observability process remain classified; however, the B-2's composite materials, special coatings and flying-wing design all contribute to its "stealthiness."

The B-2 has a crew of two pilots, an aircraft commander in the left seat and mission commander in the right, compared to the B-1B's crew of four and the B-52's crew of five.

The B-2 is intended to deliver gravity nuclear and conventional weapons, including precision-guided standoff weapons. An interim, precision-guided bomb capability called Global Positioning System (GPS) Aided Targeting System/GPS Aided Munition (GATS/GAM) is being tested and evaluated. Future configurations are planned for the B-2 to be capable of carrying and delivering the Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) and Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile.

B-2s, in a conventional role, staging from Whiteman AFB, MO; Diego Garcia; and Guam can cover the entire world with just one refueling. Six B-2s could execute an operation similar to the 1986 Libya raid but launch from the continental U.S. rather than Europe with a much smaller, more lethal, and more survivable force.

The Bush administration is seeking to develop a powerful ground-based laser weapon that would use beams of concentrated light to destroy enemy satellites in orbit.

The largely secret project, parts of which have been made public through Air Force budget documents submitted to Congress in February, is part of a wide-ranging effort to develop space weapons, both defensive and offensive. No treaty or law forbids such work.

The laser research was described by federal officials who would speak only on the condition of anonymity because of the topic's political sensitivity. The White House has recently sought to play down the issue of space arms, fearing it could become an election-year liability.

Indeed, last week Republicans and Democrats on a House Armed Services subcommittee moved unanimously to cut research money for the project in the administration's budget for the 2007 fiscal year. While Republicans on the panel would not discuss their reasons for the action, Congressional aides said it reflected a bipartisan consensus for moving cautiously on space weaponry, a potentially controversial issue that has yet to be much debated.

The full committee is expected to take up the budget issue today.

The laser research is far more ambitious than a previous effort by the Clinton administration nearly a decade ago to test an antisatellite laser. It would take advantage of an optical technique that uses sensors, computers and flexible mirrors to counteract the atmospheric turbulence that seems to make stars twinkle.

The weapon would essentially reverse that process, shooting focused beams of light upward with great clarity and force.

Though futuristic and technically challenging, the laser work is relatively inexpensive by government standards — about $20 million in 2006, with planned increases to some $30 million by 2011 — partly because no weapons are as yet being built and partly because the work is being done at an existing base, an unclassified government observatory called Starfire in the New Mexico desert.

In interviews, military officials defended the laser research as prudent, given the potential need for space arms to defend American satellites against attack in the years and decades ahead. "The White House wants us to do space defense," said a senior Pentagon official who oversees many space programs, including the laser effort. "We need that ability to protect our assets" in orbit.

But some Congressional Democrats and other experts fault the research as potential fuel for an antisatellite arms race that could ultimately hurt this nation more than others because the United States relies so heavily on military satellites, which aid navigation, reconnaissance and attack warning.

In a statement, Representative Loretta Sanchez, a California Democrat on the subcommittee who opposes the laser's development, thanked her Republican colleagues for agreeing to curb a program "with the potential to weaponize space."

Theresa Hitchens, director of the Center for Defense Information, a private group in Washington that tracks military programs, said the subcommittee's action last week was a significant break with the administration. "It's really the first time you've seen the Republican-led Congress acknowledge that these issues require public scrutiny," she said.

In a statement, the House panel, the Armed Services Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, made no reference to such policy disagreements but simply said that "none of the funds authorized for this program shall be used for the development of laser space technologies with antisatellite purposes."

It is unclear whether the Republican-controlled Congress will sustain the subcommittee's proposed cut to the administration's request, even if the full House Armed Services Committee backs the reduction.

The Air Force has pursued the secret research for several years but discussed it in new detail in its February budget request. The documents stated that for the 2007 fiscal year, starting in October, the research will seek to "demonstrate fully compensated laser propagation to low earth orbit satellites."

The documents listed several potential uses of the laser research, the first being "antisatellite weapons."

3G Iphone

As you all know that 3G iPhone is coming, and we got a confirmation from AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson says, “You’ll have it next year.” Stephenson said in response to a question about when the 3G iPhone would debut. He said he didn’t know how much more the new version will cost than the existing model, which sells for $399. Apple Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs “will dictate what the price of the phone is,” he said. However, it wouldn’t surprise us if fits back into the $599 slot vacated by the 8GB iPhone while toting a full 16GB of flash like the iPod touch.

Taj Mahal

"A white marble tomb built in 1631-48 in Agra, seat of the Mugal Empire, by Shah Jehan for his wife, Arjuman Banu Begum, the monument sums up many of the formal themes that have played through Islamic architecture. Its refined elegance is a conspicuous contrast both to the Hindu architecture of pre-Islamic India, with its thick walls, corbeled arches, and heavy lintels, and to the Indo-Islamic styles, in which Hindu elements are combined with an eclectic assortment of motifs from Persian and Turkish sources."

"The Mausoleum of the Taj Mahal at Agra stands in a formally laid-out walled garden entered through a pavilion on the main axis. The tomb, raised on a terrace and first seen reflected in the central canal, is entirely sheathed in marble, but the mosque and counter-mosque on the transverse axis are built in red sandstone. The four minarets, set symmetrically about the tomb, are scaled down to heighten the effect of the dominant, slightly bulbous dome. The mosques, built only to balance the composition are set sufficiently far away to do no more than frame the mausoleum. In essence, the whole riverside platform is a mosque courtyard with a tomb at its centre. The great entrance gate with its domed central chamber, set at the end of the long watercourse, would in any other setting be monumental in its own right."

"The interior of the building is dimly lit through pierced marble lattices and contains a virtuoso display of carved marble. Externally the building gains an ethereal quality from its marble facings, which respond with extraordinary subtlety to changing light and weather."

emo music

You probably have heard emo music. Probably someone emotional recommended you check emo out. Possibly they were crying, wearing a tight sweater or quoting impossibly saccharine lyrics from songs about crushed hearts using celestial imagery. Needless to say, emo, or emocore as it sometimes is known, is one of indie rock's most misunderstood genres. Did you know emo's roots lie in hardcore music? Did you know that emo originally had nothing to do with diary-like confessions? Oh, young grasshopper. Read on. And understand what all the fuss (and eyeliner) is really about.
The Birth of Emo:
Emo was born in the late 1980s as an outgrowth of the hardcore punk movement in Washington, D.C. The term "emo" itself was derived from the descriptor "emotional hardcore." Early emo bands -- like Rites of Spring, Embrace and Rain -- took the intense punk-based sounds of Minor Threat and added a visceral, emotional element. Amid racing punk drum beats and heavily distorted guitars, vocals grew melodic, lyrics became self-questioning and the dynamics veered between loud/soft extremes. At the climax of a song, it was not unusual for a singer to emit a scream, growl or moan.
Emo Catches On:
Many of these D.C. hardcore bands turned toward emo in response to the over-masculinization of hardcore music. Eventually, emo allowed some bands to be wildly experimental in their song writing and intricate, sometimes even delicate, guitar-work became a part of the emo sound. As the movement spread outside D.C., many hardcore and punk scenes adopted the aesthetic and emotional focus of emo. In San Diego, bands like Drive Like Jehu, Heroin and the Swing Kids developed their own, more aggressive strain of emo, dubbed "screamo." However all emo had one thing in common: a guttural, driven approach to self-expression.
Emo Weds Indie & Pop Punk:
By the early '90s, a new crop of melodic punk bands like Jawbreaker and Samiam began to incorporate the heaviness of emo into their pop punk sound. In addition, indie bands, like Sunny Day Real Estate and Jimmy Eat World, starting adding the introspective lyrical focus and trademark high/low dynamic structure to their heterogeneous indie music. In the Midwest, a group of emo-influenced bands began to abandon much of the atonality of hardcore emo, while still clinging to the intensity, the emotional rawness and the genre's serious bent. These bands included Cap'n Jazz, The Promise Ring, Braid and The Get Up Kids.
Emo Loses Ground:
By the late '90s, mainstream media began to tout emo, but the vital years of the movement had passed. Many emo bands continued playing, but abandoned emo's trademark sound. Jimmy Eat World, The Get Up Kids and The Promise Ring all got attention from the press, but produced music less like emo and more like pop punk, soft rock and indie pop, respectively. Regardless of their stylistic metamorphoses, however, the label "emo" was stuck on each band. As new groups sounding like these groups were born, they too became labeled emo -- regardless of the fact that their music was far removed from the origins of the term.
Emo Survives, Regardless:
These days, the term emo is used to describe any band playing guitar-based music that is emotional either in approach, lyrical focus or affect. 2003 brought the diary-like hit Dashboard Confessional and since then, indie-rock cross-overs Bright Eyes and Death Cab For Cutie have become successful pop acts while maintaining -- if erroneously -- the label emo. In addition, more emotional pop punk bands like Brand New, Fall Out Boy, Taking Back Sunday and Thursday are all ascribed the label regardless of whether they claim it for themselves. Today, "emo" can describe almost anything emotional.

A Brief History of Punk

Posted by Julz | 10:15 PM | | 0 comments »

The Foundations of Punk Rock

The beginnings of punk rock are often furiously debated. This is partially because everyone has different definition of punk rock, and partially because its foundation stones are found in several places.
"Punk Rock" was originally used to describe the garage musicians of the '60's. Bands like the Sonics were starting up and playing out with no musical or vocal instruction, and often limited skill. Because they didn't know the rules of music, they were able to break the rules.
The mid to late '60s saw the appearance of the Stooges and the MC5 in Detroit. They were raw, crude and often political. Their concerts were often violent affairs, and they were opening the eyes of the music world.
The Velvet Underground is the next piece in the puzzle.
The Velvet Underground, managed by Andy Warhol, were producing music that often bordered on noise. They were expanding the definitions of music without even realizing it.
The final primary influence is found in the foundations of Glam Rock. Artists like David Bowie and the New York Dolls were dressing outrageously, living extravagantly and producing loud trashy rock and roll. Glam would end up splitting up its influence, doling out portions to hard rock, "hair metal" and punk rock.

New York: The First Punk Rock Scene

The first concrete punk rock scene appeared in the mid '70s in New York. Bands like The Ramones, Wayne County, Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers, Blondie and the Talking Heads were playing regularly in the Bowery District, most notably at CBGB.
The bands were unified by their location, camaraderie, and shared musical influences. They would all go on to develop their own styles and many would shift away from punk rock.
While the New York scene was reaching its heyday, punk was undergoing a separate creation story in London.

Meanwhile, Across the Pond

England's punk scene had political and economic roots. The economy in the United Kingdom was in poor shape, and unemployment rates were at an all-time high. England's youth were angry, rebellious and out of work. They had strong opinions and a lot of free time.
This is where the beginnings of punk fashion as we know it emerged, and they centered out of one shop. The shop was simply called SEX, and it was owned by Malcolm McClaren.
Malcolm McClaren had recently returned to London from the U.S., where he had unsuccessfully tried to reinvent the New York Dolls to sell his clothing. He was determined to do it again, but this time looked to the youths who worked and hung out in his shop to be his next project. This project would become the Sex Pistols and they would develop a large following very quickly.

Enter The Bromley Contingent

Among the fans of the Sex Pistols was an outrageous bunch of young punks known as the Bromley Contingent. Named after the neighborhood they all came from, they were at the first Sex Pistols shows, and quickly realized they could do it themselves.
Within a year, the Bromleys had formed a large portion of the London Punk scene, including including The Clash,The Slits, Siouxie & the Banshees and Generation X (fronted by a young Billy Idol) and X-Ray Spex. The British punk scene was now in full swing.

The Punk Rock Explosion

By the late '70s, punk had finished its beginning and had emerged as a solid musical force. With its rise in popularity, punk began to split into numerous sub-genres. New musicians embraced the DIY movement and began to create their own individual scenes with specific sounds.

grunge revive

Posted by Julz | 10:13 PM | | 0 comments »

The grunge movement was the introduction of an independent-rooted music genre and eventually more commercially successful offshoot of hardcore punk, thrash metal and alternative rock in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Bands from the cities in the U.S. Pacific Northwest, such as Seattle, Olympia, Washington, and Portland, Oregon, made the grunge music genre popular with mainstream audiences.

As a style of music, it is generally characterised by 'dirty' guitar, strong riffs, and heavy drumming. Grunge is also popularly referred to as the Seattle Sound. Independent labels were key catalysts in bringing this style of music to the public initially. Many of the more successful bands of the era were associated with Seattle's Sub Pop record label, though several other independent Seattle labels gained recognition, including Kill Rock Stars and K Records.

Besides its punk roots, the grunge movement had strong roots in the Northwest musical culture and the local youth culture. The sonic resemblance to such 1960s Northwest bands as the Wailers and, most particularly, the Sonics is unmistakable, and grunge clothing was a blend of a punk aesthetic with the typical outdoorsy clothing (e.g. flannel shirts) of the region.
The emergence of "grunge" as a genre and its embrace by the mainstream is usually thought of as a reaction against the popular dominance of hair metal. Hair metal bands, such as W.A.S.P, Poison and Guns 'n Roses had been dominating the charts, especially in the US, for several years in spite of declining critical viability. Grunge music can be sharply constrasted to hair metal's macho lyrics, anthemic riffs, and a perceived lack of social consciousness, especially in the race to attract mainstream audiences.

Grunge was embraced by the youth for its simple defiance of the then-cultural norm, which was seen by many as a corporate-dominated and superficial popular culture. In the rock world, expensive, designer clothing was shunned in favor of flannel, jeans, and Doc Marten or Converse boots. Traditional rock and roll ostentatiousness became offensive, at least for the time being.

The mainstays of this rock genre were primarily Seattle-based bands, such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden and Stone Temple Pilots (from San Diego). Nirvana is generally credited for breaking the genre into the popular consciousness in 1991 (see 1991 in music). The success of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (off Nevermind) surprised the entire music industry. The album was a #1 hit around much of the world, and paved the way for more bands, including, most popularly, Pearl Jam. For many audiences then and later, grunge came to be almost totally associated with these two bands and their punky, rebellious attitude towards mainstream mores as well as cultural and social institutions.

The popularity of grunge music was short-lived, however. When Kurt Cobain (of Nirvana) committed suicide in April of 1994, grunge music effectively began its decline. Ironically, Cobain had often been photographed wearing t-shirts stating that "Grunge is Dead".

The general consensus of fans and music historians is that the genre was entirely too opposed to mainstream stardom to actually achieve long-lasting popularity. Many grunge bands refused to cooperate with the record labels in making radio-friendly hooks, and the labels found new bands that were willing to do so, albeit with a watered-down sound that did not sit well with the genre's long-time fans.

For many fans of the genre, it wasn't until the dissolution of grunge pioneer band Soundgarden in 1997 that they finally conceded grunge (as mainstream music) was dead. Many grunge bands have continued recording and touring with more limited success, including, most significantly, Pearl Jam.

Chartres Cathedral Commentary

"In 1194, the master-builder of Chartres outlined new principles which would inspire all the great architects of the 13th century. The elevation was in three tiers as it had no gallery (the relationship between the three levels should be noted), and the vaulting was quadripartite, which eliminated the need for alternating supports. Externally, an important change was introduced by abandoning the five towers initially planned over the transepts."

A new species of shark has been just been discovered by Japanese fishermen. The shark's natural habitat is six hundred meters under the sea which makes it really rare to spot. The creature was caught and measured at 1.6 meters and identified as a female frilled shark, most times referred to as a "living fossil" because it's a primitive species that has change little over the last few million years

Castel Beranger Commentary

"Never entirely resolved as a total composition, the Castel Béranger is nonetheless an important transitional work in Guimard's career. The stem and branch-like character of both the interior furnishing and the exterior ironwork stand in a curious and brittle contrast to the articulate, architectonic but disjunctive elements that make up the cumbersome mass of the building's exterior. With 36 apartments, each different from the next, the Castel Béranger is a curious compound of rational planning and non-rational intent and expression. Guimard was to exploit its competition as an occasion for promoting le style Guimard. To this end he staged an exhibition of the building and its contents in the Salon du Figaro in 1899, while simultaneously publishing a book of the work under the title, L'Art dans l'habitation moderne. Le Castel Béranger. More acerbic than his flamboyant country houses of the turn of the century and located in the fashionable, fast-growing suburb of Auteuil, the Castel Béranger gave Guimard a prime opportunity with which to demonstrate the synthetic subtleties of his style, in which urban and rustic references could be judiciously mixed together."

CPDRC Dance Session: Smooth Criminals

The date of August 8, 2007 will forever be remembered by the Cebuanos and visiting watchers who have gathered in the CPDRC (Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center) compound. This is so since, for the first time, the CPDRC inmates have prepared themselves for a certain dance session inspired by Michael Jackson’s hit, Thriller. Approximately 1,500 inmates instilled awe to the unsuspecting spectators and dazzled them with their oh-so-smooth version of the hit song. They also performed the hits YMCA and In The Navy by The Village People.

In the beginning

It began with an idea to add a bit of structure to the inmates’ daily exercise. Since its first day, the usual exercise turned out to be a better change that enabled the CPDRC inmates to get enjoyable experience and not just get weary with their poor regimen. The idea would be to let the inmates do daily exercises that would require discipline and patience; two components that, I think, represent the whole rehabilitation program.

First off to be appointed in the said program was 35-year-old Wenjiel Resane, a former pizza chef tasked to play the part of Michael Jackson’s “girlfriend” in the Thriller video-inspired dance. The ponytailed Resane is pending trial on a drug charge and is part of the openly gay community in the compound. Meanwhile, the known “star” of the CPDRC dance show is 36-year-old Crisanto Nierre, another inmate who is appointed to play Michael Jackson. Ironically, his childhood favorite hits are Jackson’s hits Smooth Criminal and Bad.

Among other inmates who have participated in the performance are awaiting trials on murder charges.

The aftermath

I visited the known video-sharing turf of YouTube and found out that there are over 10 million views along with lots of comments already. This is actually one of Cebu’s hot items right now, if not the hottest. With its acquired popularity, whether the radio waves and television, a donation of P1.6 million was given to the CPDRC foundation to be used in facility improvement and others. The inmates who have participated in the dance event was given P1,000.00 each for their own consummation.

Presently, the CPDRC group is now rehearsing their next dance titled “Together in Electric Dreams”.

With this kind of treatment, not to mention the reward and delight, given to the inmates, I wouldn’t be surprised if they try to refuse their much-anticipated plea to be released. Or if so, they’re going to find means to get back inside once again and join the CPDRC dance session once again.

Our skin is an amazing organ. It is the first line of defence against bacteria, it helps to make vitamin D, regulates temperature, provides sensory feedback and much more.

Skin cells are constantly regenerating but, unfortunately, this is not enough to prevent scars from forming when the skin is damaged. The skin is made up of three layers. The top layer, the epidermis, renews itself every 28 days, but this renewal takes place at the deepest level just before the dermis starts.
To have a beautiful skin, this area needs to have a good supply of nutrients, oxygen and removal of metabolic wastes.
skin layers
The middle layer, the dermis, is where the glands, hair follicles, blood and lymphatic vessels are located.
This later contains collagen (which gives the skin a firm appearance) and elastin (which gives the skin its ability to stretch and bounce back). We lose elastin in the natural ageing process, which is why we get wrinkles.
Finally, the subcutis is the deepest layer and is mostly made up of fat that acts as a shock absorber, and insulator. The body always trying to heal itself, so to help scars heal faster, it is important to treat it from the inside using good nutrition and detoxing if needed, and from the outside with creams and oils.
Prevent Acne From The Inside With These Foods:
  1. Organic Green Tea - This is rich in an anti-inflammatory chemical called catechins, which helps to combat free radicals and prevent fine lines.
  2. Olive oil - good monounsaturated fats like olive or sesame oil contain essential fatty acids that are needed for good health. Fats are an integral part of cell membranes and will help to nourish the skin and give it an inner glow.
  3. Walnuts - They are rich in omega-3 oils, another powerful antioxidant that helps to keep the skin plump and flexible. Omega-3 oils are also found in oily fish such as salmon, or in flaxseed oil.
  4. Berries - Blueberries, raspberries, cranberries are all rich in phytochemicals that are protective of skin cells. You can't get the same results though, from frozen or preserved fruit.
  5. Lemon Juice - It's a natural bleach and can be used to fade sunspots and freckles. Put a slice of lemon over the spot and leave it for 10 minutes everyday for a week, or exfoliate by rubbing a cut lemon and half a teaspoon of granulated sugar over the skin for a few minutes. Be careful not to get any lemon in your eyes and stop immediately if you get a bad reaction as some people have extremely sensitive skin.
  6. Watermelon - Some people believe that rubbing their faces with the rind of a watermelon will give them beautiful skin. There is plenty of truth to this, as the pulp of the fruit is a good exfoliant and watermelon is rich in vitamins A, B and C. The fruit contains a lot of water which serves to hydrate the skin and the gentle massaging action will stimulate lymphatic drainage.
  7. Low-Fat Dairy Products - One the most important components of skin health is vitamin A. One of the best places to get it is low-fat dairy products. In fact, experts say that the health of our skin cells is dependent on dietary vitamin A.
  8. Whole-Wheat Bread, Cereals and Brazil nuts - Dietary selenium comes from nuts, cereals, meat, fish, and eggs. Brazil nuts are the richest ordinary dietary source. The mineral selenium connects all these foods for healthy skin. Experts say selenium plays a key role in the health of skin cells. Some studies show that even skin damaged by the sun may suffer fewer consequences if selenium levels are high.
  9. Yogurt - Yogurt is a very important natural beauty aid. Apply yogurt on the face every morning. Wash it off after a few minutes with cold water. This will keep the complexion smooth, healthy and fresh. A mixture of yogurt and lemon juice is ideal for softening hands.
  10. Water - While the exact amount you should drink each day varies, no one disputes the role good hydration plays in keeping skin looking healthy and even young. When that hydration comes from pure, clean water - not liquids such as soda or even soup - experts say skin cells rejoice.
And, of course, there is common sense - get enough sleep, and don't pick at your scars, because that can introduce bacteria into the area. Good personal hygiene and washing your face with a gentle cleanser will also help soothe angry skin.

Over the past century, hundreds of ships and planes have gone missing in a mysterious stretch of water in the Atlantic Ocean called the Bermuda Triangle. Is there a scientific explanation for these disappearances?

Miami, Puerto Rico and Bermuda are prime holiday destinations boasting sun, beaches and coral seas. But between these idyllic settings, there is a dark side: countless ships and planes have mysteriously gone missing in the one and a half million square miles of ocean separating them. About 60 years ago, the area was claiming about five planes every day and was nicknamed the Bermuda Triangle by a magazine in 1964. Today, about that many planes disappear in the region each year and there are a number of theories explaining what could be happening.

The Bermuda Triangle, a stretch of water between Puerto Rico, Bermuda and Florida, has been the site of many plane and ship disappearances.
Twins George and David Rothschild are among the first passengers to have experienced bizarre effects in the Bermuda Triangle. In 1952, when they were 19 years old, the two naval men had to make an emergency trip home on a navy light aircraft, north over the Florida Keys, to attend their father’s funeral. “We had been flying for probably 20 or 30 minutes when all of a sudden the pilot yelled out that the instruments were dead and he became very frantic,” says George Rothschild. He had lost his bearings, and not only did he not know where he was, he also had no idea how much gas was left in the fuel tanks. After what seemed like hours, they landed safely in Norfolk, on the Florida coast.

Some speculate that it had nothing to do with the location, but rather the instruments that were available at the time. Pilot Robert Grant says that back in the 1940s, navigating a plane involved a lot of guesswork since they relied completely on a magnetic compass to guide them. ‘Dead reckoning’ was used, which means that pilots would trust their compass and then estimate how the wind would influence their planned flight path to remain on track. “No matter what your mind tells you, you must stay on that course,” says Grant. “If you don’t, and you start turning to wherever you think you should be going, then you’re toast.”

Wild weather

The landscape of the island of Bermuda is quite unique: it is a remote coral reef precariously perched on a massive extinct volcano. Fisherman Sloan Wakefield, who knows the waters of the Bermuda Triangle very well, thinks that the weather could be responsible for some of the disappearances. “Because the island is a dot in the Atlantic Ocean, it gets weather from everywhere and it can change in a heartbeat. One minute, you can be looking at good weather, and the next moment you’ve got a low front coming through,” he says. He has already seen 15 to 20 foot (4.6m to 6m) waves on the sea.

An image of Tropical Storm Harvey, which hit Bermuda in August 2005.
Hurricanes are common in the Bermuda Triangle area. In the Atlantic Ocean, they typically originate off the African coast and thrive off the moisture of the warm, tropical waters. Hurricane records from the past 100 years have shown that they often head west for the United States but swerve into the waters of the Bermuda Triangle at the last minute. Jim Lushine, a meteorologist at the National Hurricane Centre in Miami, Florida studies the weather in the Bermuda Triangle and says that there are more hurricanes in that particular area than in any other in the Atlantic basin.
But thunderstorms in the area can be just as dangerous. In 1986, a historic ship called the Pride of Baltimore vanished from radar screens while it was in the Bermuda Triangle, making a trip from the Caribbean to Baltimore. About four and a half days later, the wreckage and eight survivors were found and they revealed that the ship had been hit by a microburst: 80 mile per hour winds emanating from a freak thunderstorm. It happened so quickly that the crew didn’t have time to make a distress call. “The ship was sunk in the downburst, unfortunately with a great loss of life,” says Lushine. “Similar downbursts are probably responsible for some of the sunken ships in the Bermuda Triangle.”
Even more unpredictable than thunderstorms are waterspouts. These can be caused by tornadoes that move out to sea or rotating columns of air that drop from thunderstorms, creating a vortex of spray. When the moisture condenses, it forms a twisting column that connects the sea to the clouds. Jim Edds, an amateur fisherman who chases and films waterspouts for fun, says that if you are out at night and a tornado-like waterspout develops - the really big, strong ones with high velocity - it can flip your vessel over.

Over training

Posted by Julz | 6:25 PM | | 0 comments »

It is just human nature that whatever feels good to us we will continue doing over and over again.
Now that you’re finally exercising, you don’t want to stop. However, there is a point when too much of a good thing turns into a trap. “More is better” doesn’t necessarily apply to training. If what used to feel great is now a chore or a flight of stairs suddenly makes a breathless challenge, then you might be overdoing it.
The number one cause of over-training is overuse; that is too much of the same thing too often without enough rest. The difficulty is identifying the problem because over-training is easily masked by symptoms characteristics of other ailments that produce similar response.

The number one cause of over-training is overuse; that is too much of the same thing too often without enough rest.

Here’s a list of over-training symptoms. If you suffer from two or more of these for more than a few weeks you might need to rest to recover from burnout:

v Sudden change in ability to exercise at the same intensity you’ve been at
v Drastic weight loss in a very short period of time
v Increase in resting heart rate
v Breathless after workout of normal aerobic intensity
v Los of appetite or nausea after eating
v Swelling or aching lymph glands in neck, underarm, or grain area
v Anemia
v Amenorrhea (loss of menstrual cycle)
v Pain in muscles or joints
v Muscle cramping at night
v Difficulty sleeping
v Edema
v Overuse injury like tendonitis or skin splints
v Change of mood, irritable or depressed

So when you have these symptoms, what should you do? Well, first you might need a break. I didn’t say quit. Just check or evaluate your physical activities and substitute it with some less strenuous activities to help get you back on your feet. Then vary your program both in exercise and intensity levels.
Maybe if you’re doing some weight training you might schedule when to have a light, medium and heavy day. Or if you’re doing some cardiovascular workout, like brisk walking or running, biking, swimming, you must see to it that not all days of the week are high intensity, fat burning workouts.
Always vary your workout and intensity levels. Consider both rest and recreation as part of your program then you’ll stay motivated, your body will love you and you won’t get injured.

Grand Canyon Skyway

When standing at the rail of the observation deck of the Sears Tower– one of the tallest buildings in the world– many visitors experience some degree of vertigo at the brink of the sheer, 1,353 foot drop-off. This is a natural response as the body's self-defense system reminds its owner of the dangers of gravity. If you're not fond of heights, a new construction project underway in Arizona will probably cause that self-defense mechanism to chew its way out of your body and flee for safety. It's called the Grand Canyon Skyway, and it dabbles in altitudes which dwarf that of the Sears Tower.
will jut out seventy feet off the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, suspending its occupants about 4,000 feet above the ground (about thrice the height of the Sears Tower) as they stand on a glass floor, looking down. The walkway's walls will be comprised of the same four-inch-thick glass as the floor, which will leave the spectacular view relatively unobstructed, even for those people who opt to remain on all fours.
The concept was born in the brain of David Jin in 1996, and is now being overseen by the Hualapai Indians who have a reservation along the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Once complete, the Skyway will be reinforced by over a million pounds of 2.5-inch-thick steel beams which should allow it to support seventy-two million pounds of weight, survive an 8.0 magnitude earthquake fifty miles away, and withstand winds in excess of 100 miles per hour. Its design also calls for dampers to minimize the structure's vibration, which will allow the walkway to comfortably support up to one hundred and twenty people at once. Upon opening, $25 will buy tourists a stroll (or crawl) on the Skyway which will provide a unique new perspective on the Grand Canyon. Park officials are anticipating that this unique new feature will double the current number of visitors to the park. Alongside the Skyway will be an Indian Village, a Western-themed town, and an underground restaurant with canyon views and rooftop dining.

At 4,000 feet above the Colorado River, the view of the Grand Canyon from the walkway promises to be nothing short of astonishing. Consider that if one fell from such a height, one would have about twenty-five seconds– about a half minute– to enjoy the Grand Canyon's incredible scenery before impact. When the Skyway project began, its planners originally hoped that it would open by January 1, 2006. Since then, it has been delayed by "unique engineering challenges," as well as trouble finding an insurance company willing to insure the structure without getting twitchy. Currently the opening date is slated for March 2007.

Albay's neighboring province to the south, Sorsogon, is host to one of the highest concentration of Whale Sharks in the world. These creatures have been frequenting the waters off Donsol, Sorsogon for generations and in 1998, the Philippine Department of Tourism declared this area an official sanctuary for the Whale Shark, thus protected this fascinating species.

Although Whale Sharks, or "Butanding" as they are locally known, are enormous in size and power, reaching lengths greater than 15 meters, they are remarkably gentle and docile enough that it is generally safe to swim among them. Swimming among the whale sharks is a captivating experience. If you are not comfortable swimming in the waters, then it is just as amazing to experience them from the boat. The Butanding swim along side the boat all the time.

Generally, the whale sharks at Donsol swim very close to the surface of the water. Some basic snorkeling gear (mask, snorkel, fins and a water vest) are just about you'll need in the water to be able to experience swimming among them.

Getting there: Donsol, Sorsogon is approximately 1-hour drive away from Legazpi City. The roads all the way to Donsol are well-paved, scenic and very accessible. There are several Taxis available that make daily routes from Legazpi to Donsol, Sorsogon.

RICHARD BRANSON
The 57-year-old founder of Virgin Group runs an empire that stretches from airline Virgin Atlantic to the music chain Virgin Megastores to Virgin Galactic, a new space tourism company that plans to offer the first commercial flights into space by 2008.We have fun competing, and we sometimes do it with a smile. When British Airways managed to sponsor the London Eye, the giant Ferris wheel on the banks of the Thames, they called a massive press conference. There was just one problem: They couldn't get the wheel up; it was lying on the ground. So we scrambled and got an airship [blimp], and as the wheel lay on the ground with the press watching—they had been kept waiting for seven hours—the airship flew over the wheel with a huge sign saying "BA can't get it up." This is the stuff that makes people smile. It is done in a tongue-in-cheek way, but it is very much part of the Virgin brand. It is this kind of fun-spirited competition that helps build a brand.

I relish competition. Virgin will only go where there is a real need for us. We are a global company, and there are still giants taking people for a ride in a number of industries across the world. We will have fun stepping in and trying to knock them down. The world is a much better place [with more competition]. There are more players in every industry and more innovation. Take short-haul air travel: In Australia we launched Virgin Blue at a time when the Australian carrier Qantas had a monopoly. Hundreds of thousands of people who couldn't travel before now can. So competition makes a big difference in people's lives.Of course, sometimes there isn't enough competition. Some of the big dinosaurs in America, the airlines, keep getting credit and reinventing themselves thanks to Chapter 11.

We Philippines Tarsier Monkey's are probably the smallest primates in the world. Our Latin name is 'Tarsius Syrichta'. Our diet consists of insects in the main which we eat live. Our height is between 90 to 160 mm (3.5 to 6.25 inches). Our weight is between 70 to 165 grams (3-6 ozs). Our big eyes give us very acute night vision which make us good night hunters. Our big ears can move in the direction of any noise and our heads can swivel through 180 degrees which all help us in hunting

Plunge into the deep - clear blue water, complemented by verdant rolling hills and friendly and religious people that's Bohol. Aptly called "God's Little Paradise", the island province of Bohol lies in the center of the Philippines, southeast of Cebu and southwest of Leyte. The oval shape mainland comparable to that of proverbial yam "ubing kinampay" or purple yam has a total land area of 411,726 hectares including 73 other islands and islets. Tagbiliran City, it's capital is 630 kilometers from Manila and 72 air kilometers from Cebu City. It consists of 47 municipalities, one city and 1,114 barangays. Bohol's beauty lies in its explore depths of Bohol waters which are rated among the best diving haven in the world and famous not only for its richness in marine life and corals but also for its being the home of the Tarsier, the big-eyed insect eating monkey whose size is smaller than a body fist. Scientists regard the tarsier as the oldest mammal living mammal now inhabiting the earth. Other added attractions are waterfalls amidst untapped forests, caves with stalagmites and stalactites, natural parks, exotic wildlife, centuries - old churches and edifices and lot of historical landmarks.

Chocolate Hills - This the most famous tourist attraction in Bohol. Among the thousands of perfectly cone-shaped hills which abound in Central Bohol, two of the hills have been developed into resort. On top of the hill are two youth hostels with a conference room, cozy cottages with private rooms and accommodations, swimming pool, tennis court and restaurant. A climb up 213 concrete steps on the other hill is an observation deck where one can view God's wondrous creations spread below as far as the eyes can see. The grasses which cover the hills turn brown in the cry season. Its uniqueness shows when the hills are wet, it turns into green and when the sun is up high, it turns brown.
THE LEGEND OF CHOCOLATE HILLS

Legend has it that the hills came into existance when two giants threw stones and sand at each other in a fight that lasted for days. When they were finally exhausted, they made friends and left the island, but left behind the mess they made. For the more romantically inclined is the tale of Arogo, a young and very strong giant who fell in love with an ordinary mortal girl called Aloya. After she died, the giant Arogo cried bitterly. His tears then turned into hills, as a lasting proof of his grief.
However, up to this day, even geologists have not reached concensus on how they where formed. The most commonly accept theory is that they are the weathered formations of a kind of marine limestone on top of a impermeable layer of clay. If you climb the 214 steps to the top of the observation hill near the complex, you can read this explanation on a bronze plaque.

Kawasan Falls

Begin your day with a trip beyond the mountains...to Cebu's Southwestern coastline. See a breathtaking vie of the islands. Then, trek uphill to admire the two-layered Kawasan Falls. Get a splash from the gushing waters while balancing on a bamboo raft. End with a picnic lunch and a swim in cool waters.
